Here's how can severe varicose veins can affect a person's health

Did you know that some severe varicose veins can cause complications like stroke, heart attack, and embolism?

In an episode of Pinoy MD, dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez said some severe cases of varicose veins can develop symptoms such as pain and swelling, where later it becomes bigger and cause bulging in the skin.

When this happens, "hindi magiging maganda yung circulation sa area ng skin kung nasaan, nasa ilalim yung varicose veins," Dr. Jean said.

Apart from causing perforation and skin discoloration, varicose veins can also cause other complications like blood clots in the area where they are.

Dr. Jean said if the circulation is not good in the area, the blood will pile up and later harden into a clot.

This happens especially to patients with a sedentary lifestyle and who are barely moving. When they do, the blood clot can get dislodged, which Dr. Jean said can possibly cause blockage in the heart, veins, and brain and then root into other complications like stroke, heart attack, and embolism.

While this rarely happens, Dr. Jean suggests that it's better to have the varicose veins treated before it gets worse through sclerotherapy and other lasers. — Jannielyn Ann Bigtas/LA, GMA News
