How and why do keloids form and is it possible to remove or avoid them?

Do you ever wonder how keloids form on the skin?

According to a report on PinoyMD, people get keloid from surgeries, skin trauma, or acne.

Dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez said a keloid is a type of scar that continuously grows beyond the area or region.

Why does this happen? Dr. Jean said keloid forms "to repair the area that’s been injured kaya kailangan tayo mag-form ng collagen."

"Ngayon sa mga keloid formers, hindi nade-detect ng katawan to stop producing the scar tissue or the collagen kung kayat patuloy lang siyang produce nang produce ng collagen, at ito ay nagiging makapal na scar," she added.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, scars may become keloids after skin injuries, insect bites, scars, cuts, and injection areas.

The report said keloids can also cause aches and itchiness due to small nerve fibers involved.

For treatments, Dr. Jean said sessions of injecting steroids, botox, and laser might help.

Dr. Jean said this will help make the keloid become thinner and avoid recurring.

She also suggested using a silicone scar sheet to avoid itchiness and scarring.

To avoid getting keloids, Dr. Jean said it is best to inform your doctor that you are keloidal so they can give you creams and treatment to prevent it. — Jannielyn Ann Bigtas/LA, GMA News
