What do your nightmares mean? Dream analyst interprets some of our usual night terrors

Are nightmares just thoughts, visions and feelings we conjure up in our heads, or do they reveal our deepest unconscious desires and wishes?

In a segment on "Unang Hirit," psychiatrist and dream analyst Dr. Randy Dellosa said what we see in our dreams can be a symbol or even a replay of situations from our actual lives.

"However, it's the dreams you have while in deep sleep that we need to interpret," he said in Filipino.

According to Dr. Dellosa, people who have nightmares usually carry "heavy baggage" or are under a lot of stress.

However, bad dreams can also be a way to tap into your subconscious and find out what's troubling you.

"Don't be afraid of scary dreams," he said.

"Instead, you should analyze them because nightmares are a usually our commentary of stress or unresolved baggage in our lives. So it's a call to action, telling us that we need to wake up and confront the realities of our lives," he added.

Dr. Dellosa also gave his take on some common terrors that visit you in your sleep:

1. Faceless person

Dreaming about someone without a face can be a terrifying experience, but Dr. Dellosa would recommend seeing him/her in another light.

"We need to focus on that person's characteristics, instead of his/her identity. We need to ask ourselves, 'How does this faceless person make me feel? Am I scared? Am I sad?"

2. Chased by the grim reaper

According to Dr. Dellosa, having this dream means there's some aspect in your life that has come to an end or needs to be put to rest, like a relationship or a career or an ambition.

3. Coffin

"A coffin is something that needs to be buried," Dr. Dellosa explained.

"Therefore, there's one aspect in our lives that needs to be resolved, so that means we need to confront that issue so we cab 'bury it' and to move on."

4. Reunion with a dead loved one

It's a common belief that our dead relatives visiting us in our dreams is their way of giving you a sign or saying one final farewell.

However, Dr. Dellosa said it's important to remember: "Minsan, simbolo lang yung taong 'yun. Simbolo 'yun ng nangyari sa buhay natin."

"So we have to remember that anything that we dream about are just symbols," he said. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
