5 Christmas gift ideas that won't contribute to the trash problem

This Christmas, consider giving Planet Earth a break.

According to a 2018 EcoWaste Coalition interview, a person produces 0.2-0.4 kilos of trash on the daily. During holidays like Christmas, the number increases to a kilo of trash per person. If this continues, landfills will be filled up quickly like what happened to Payatas in Quezon City and Smoky Mountain in Manila.

We rounded up gift ideas that won't contribute further to the trash problem. They're experiential in nature so surely, they'll help your recipient learn a new skill, finally get some exercise, and just get better.

1. Dance classes!

The school may be called The Halili-Cruz School of Ballet but this Quezon City institution offers a slew of dance classes including hip-hop, jazz, tap for both kids and adults.

Of course ballet classes is always in the plethora of choices but look: there's also contemporary dance classes for adults who wanna groove to hits from the '70s to '90s!

You may choose between twice a week classes (12/sessions for P9,500) or once a week arrangement (6 sessions/P6,500). Their next cycle begins on January 5 and to end on February 14. +639199970970 or +639178880102. Halili-Cruz School of Ballet 1227 Quezon Avenue, Quezon City. WebsiteInstagram

2. Why not a massage?

Seriously, who wouldn't appreciate a massage — a facial or a foot spa, for that matter?

The Spa has gift cards — in denominations of P1,000, P1,500 and P2,000 — so you can also give your loved ones flexibility and decide which relaxing service fits their needs best.

The gift cards are good to use in any of their seven locations across Metro Manila, so your loved one may book whatever service they may need at whatever location nearest them. Website. Instagram

3. A low-commitment gym membership!

Unless your recipient asked for it (or is already a gym rat), you might want to rethink giving a month's worth of gym membership as a present.

Consider instead Saddle Row's five-class pass for first timers. The pass allows them to try any or all of the Rockwell gym's in-studio classes: cycling, rowing, or yoga.

The fine print: Gift cards must be activated within 15 days of purchase. And then they're valid for only 15 days upon booking the first class. No need to feel pressured with the span of validity. The workout options might just get your loved one might hooked to endorphins sooner rather than later. +639171787625. Website. Instagram

4. Learn a new language

Learning a new language won't just put anybody in the mood to travel, it will also help keep brains sharp. Instituto de Cervantes is offering Spanish classes. It's a month-long 30-hour course that can be taken on weekdays (P5,500) or Saturdays (P5,900). Just a heads-up: They'll need books too, which cost P575 each. Website.  +632 85261482. Instagram

5. Get into pottery

Pottery is pretty popular these days and while, yes buying one is always an option, enrolling your friend to a pottery class will also teach said friend a new skill, help grow their brain (anything new is said to expand our gray matter, science says), and cure boredom. It's perfect for teens and Gen Zers who are always looking for something new and interesting to do.

Bumi and Ashe in Cubao X has a basic pottery class — Wheel Throwing 101, they call it — that teaches the basic fundamentals of using a pottery wheel. A three-hour class will cost you P3,650 and that includes the use of a potter's wheel, fundamentals syllabus, 1.5kg stoneware clay, and you get your pieces for free.

The pottery studio has started offering gift cards for three classes, of which Wheel Throwing 101 is included. Upon confirmation of payment, you will receive a special code to be used in checkout of your recipient's class of choice. Website. Instagram
