Doctor who passed the Bar exams hopes to practice legal medicine

A doctor who passed the Bar exam hopes to practice legal medicine and combine his knowledge in both fields while serving the country.

Dr. John Kelly Cainday, who studied medicine in the University of Santo Tomas, earned his medical license back in 2014.

However, he decided to continue pursuing higher education and took up law in Centro Escolar University, where he graduated salutatorian.

On Tuesday, he became one of the few people in the Philippines who have both titles attached to their names after passing 2019 Bar examinations.

"As a lawyer, you can still practice pagiging doctor. You can be a lawyer sa medical field na kailangan ng legal expertise," he told GMA News Online.

As he waits to take his oath, he said that he'll go back to his hometown in Borongan City, Eastern Samar as soon as he could.

"Doon na muna ako sa Eastern Samar kasi mas kailangan ng doctor doon. Mas importante muna nasa locality ako since with the pandemic, I have to serve my hometown," Cainday said.

He hopes that he can apply his knowledge of the law in terms of policy-making and understanding the projects of the Department of Health.

Cainday said that he wanted to be both a lawyer and a doctor because he always thought that people run to doctors to heal them while people run to lawyers to save them from danger.

"I wanted to be that for the people," he said.
