4 ways you can keep your pets healthy and clean at home

Since some fur parents can’t visit the vet clinic these days as much as they did before the coronavirus pandemic, many of them are left to their own devices in keeping their pets healthy and clean at home.

As we continue to stay at home and take care of our pets, an episode of “Home Work” with Tonipet Gaba last Thursday shared a few tips on how to help our furry babies grow into healthy pets with clean fur.

1. Always clean your pets’ bowls.

Tonipet shared that it’s important to always clean our pets’ bowls since whatever they drink or eat there goes directly to their system.

If left dirty, this may affect our pets.

2. Put a little amount of apple cider vinegar in food.

Tonipet shared that putting a little bit of apple cider vinegar in your pet’s food or vitamins can go a long way especially if they suffer from kidney problems.

“Konting portion lang,” Tonipet said. However, he warned fur parents that what may work for his pet may not work for others so it’s still best to talk to an expert regarding your pet’s diet.

3. Bathe your pets in intervals, not daily.

Veterinarian Edifer Vinoya shared that our cats and dogs shouldn’t be bathed on a daily basis. Instead, cats should only bathe every six weeks while dogs should bathe three times a week.

In bathing dogs, Vinoya shared that the shampoo product should be intended for dogs.

“Kung may skin problem, kailangan medicated shampoo. Kung wala naman, kailangan ng organic na shampoo, mga herbal na shampoo,” Vinoya said.

Cats, however, have their own self-grooming techniques. The disadvantage, however, is that it may lead to hairballs which can obstruct their gastrointestinal tracts and cause serious medical conditions, Vinoya said.

When bathing a pet cat, you can hold them or put them on a leash if they become rowdy.

If there’s no supplies at home, you can just use scissors, clipper, and a wet towel to groom a cat. Just trim their hair and wipe with a wet towel.

4. Clean them immediately if they accidentally get out.

If our pets accidentally get out of the house, immediately clean them up when they get back inside. The most important parts to clean are their legs and paws.

Tonipet shared that aside from these tips, it’s also still important to do research and seek professional help when dealing with and grooming our pets. – Kaela Malig/RC
