Here are Christmas-themed plants that are easy to care for at home

Move over, Christmas trees — real, actual plants are the thing now.

"Unang Hirit" on Tuesday shone the spotlight on Christmas-themed plants that one could grow at home, namely the poinsettia, araucaria pine tree, and pukyante.

According to Halamanist PH's Tracy Pamparo, the araucaria should be placed in a bright area, and watered once the top soil is dry. You should also spray plain water on its leaves.

Its price ranges from P799 to P1,500.

The poinsettia meanwhile must be watered the same way, but it must not be placed in direct sunlight, else it would wither.

And fun fact: It changes colors when it's Christmas season!

"Pag Christmas season, red siya. After ng Christmas season, babalik siya sa pagka-green. And then pag malapit na naman ang Christmas season, mag-re-red ulit siya," Tracy said.

A poinsettia costs around P500 each.

The pukyante meanwhile can be purchased year-round. It's an ideal plant because you can shape it any way you want.

This one thrives in direct sun and with regular watering.

Tracy said it already looks like a Christmas tree, so you need only put lightweight decorations on it — and make sure it's lightweight so as not to harm the plant!
