Here’s a first look at ‘Shadow and Bone,’ Netflix’s upcoming new fantasy series

Another exciting fantasy series is coming to Netflix this April.

“Shadow and Bone,” based on the bestselling Grishaverse novels, takes place in a war-torn world where a lowly soldier and orphan named Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) unleashes an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free.

The eight-episode series premieres April 23, 2021 on Netflix.

The streaming site just released first-look images featuring Jessie Mei Li as Alina, Archie Renaux as Malyen Oretsev, Ben Barnes as General Kirigan and more.

According to author and executive producer Leigh Bardugo, "‘Shadow and Bone’ takes place in a very different kind of fantasy world."

“Think Imperial Russia, not Medieval England, repeating rifles instead of broadswords. It’s a story about the people who have been told how much they don’t matter proving how much they do," Bardugo says.

"It’s been incredible to see that story take shape on such an epic scale, the battles, the magic, but also the relationships between the characters,” she adds. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
