Taylor Swift course offered at New York University

New York University is offering a new course on Taylor Swift!

According a report on Variety, the class was launched by the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music on January 26. It is taught by Brittany Spanos, a writer for music magazine Rolling Stone.

Spanos, who previously attended NYU and took courses at Clive, said it has been her dream to teach at her alma mater.

"I've been covering Taylor Swift since I began my writing career a decade ago and have been a super fan of hers for even longer. It's such an honor to be able to share my Swiftie expertise with a sharp group of students," she told Variety.

"I hope to help them rethink how to engage with one of the things world's biggest and sometimes divisive stars, in the same way Clive professors like Jason King, Vivien Goldman and Joe Levy did for me when I took their courses," she added.

In the course description, the class aims to "deconstruct both the appeal and aversions to Taylor Swift through close readings of her music and public discourse as it relates to her own growth as an artist and a celebrity."

Variety said the course has a long waitlist and Swift has been invited to speak to the class, but it remains to be seen whether or not she will make herself available.

Veteran music writer and musician Jason King, who chairs the institute, said he thought the course was a "no-brainer" when Spanos first suggested it to him.

"She's a Taylor fan but she also understands how to contextualize her culturally, and get students to think more deeply about her and her music through the lens of gender, feminism, race, and class, and other categories related to identity, and that deeper thinking is what this program is all about," he said.
