Julie Anne San Jose, Gary Valenciano’s ‘Di Ka Akin’ is a tearjerker for those needing closure

If you’re looking to cry your eyes out and needing some closure, Julie Anne San Jose and Gary Valenciano’s “Di Ka Akin” may just do the trick.

Written by Asia’s Limitless Star herself, the song was about words left unsaid after ending things with a loved one, Julie Anne said in an online interview with the press.

“Post breakup siya eh. Walang label pero at the same time, may gusto ka pang sabihin sa kanya na hindi mo nasabi,” she said, adding that listeners may have their own interpretations.

“‘What if ganito nangyari before? What if ganito iyong sinabi ko? What if ganito ginawa natin together? We could’ve worked this out’ and stuff like that.”

The singer added it was also about moving forward despite what-could-have-beens.

“Kapag hindi para sa iyo, ’di talaga eh. Tsaka malalaman mo kung yung taong iyon ay para sa ’yo talaga. Kahit anong mangyari, talagang si Lord, meron siyang isang taong nakalaan talaga for us,” she said.

“At the end of the day, kung hindi talaga para sa ’yo, all you have to do is just accept it and may mga bagay talaga na hindi meant for us. ’Pag tinanggal yung isang bagay sa ’yo, may better na darating.”

The song’s music video, meanwhile, features the story of a former couple who share their feelings with each other after their breakup.

“They’re really going to let each other know but not in the spirit of war, revenge, and regret, but more of a closure without the hope of the person coming back,” Gary said.

“[It’s] just letting the other know,” he added. “It’s a new chapter and new chapters in life don’t always begin in a happy way. They sometimes can begin in a very painful way.”

“Di Ka Akin” is now available on all streaming platforms. Its music video premieres Thursday, 7 p.m., on Universal Records Philippines’ YouTube channel. – RC, GMA News
