Christian Bautista shares the story behind his classic hit 'The Way You Look At Me'

When you think of Christian Bautista, you think of “The Way You Look At Me.”

It’s the balladeer’s classic hit that inspired generations of artists to release covers of the song, including folk-pop band Ben&Ben.

In an interview on the podcast “Updated with Nelson Canlas,” Christian shared the story behind the hit song.

He said he always sang Josh Groban songs at singing contests, as well as for his audition for Warner Music.

After that particular audition, Christian recalled, “Parang nag-iisip pa lang sila. ‘Hmm... okay, thank you. Sige, we'll let you know, we'll call you.”

“So parang feeling ko noong moment na yun, ‘okay, [baka hindi ako dito], ganito, ganyan," he added.

Looking back, Christian realized that maybe the record label saw a future with him.

“In-offer sa akin yung song na ‘The Way You Look At Me’ after siguro a month or after a few weeks,” he said. “And then nung narinig ko nga, [naisip ko], ‘Wow! Ang ganda nito.’”

Christian added, “Ang tagal na pala ng kanta na yun sa kanila, hindi lang alam kung kanino ibibigay na artist. Sa akin daw bumagay.”

And indeed, nobody can quite sing it the way Christian does!

Christian is set to hold his 20th-anniversary concert also called “The Way You Look at Me,” today, January 28 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati.
