'The Color Purple' releases powerful trailer for the latest reimagining of the classic

Director Blitz Bazawule's "The Color Purple" just released its first trailer and we are seated.

The trailer promises a powerful reimagining of the novel by Alice Walker, which has previously been adapted into a drama and a musical.

Viewers are introduced to Celie (Phylicia Mpasi, Fantasia Barrino) and Nettie Harris (Halle Bailey, Ciara Wilson), two sisters who are torn apart amid their traumatic childhood. A preview of the songs were also featured.

"The Color Purple" tells the story of Celie, a young African-American woman who is raped by her father and bears two of his children. She is later married off to an abusive man.

The film is produced by Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones, Steven Spielberg, and Scott Sanders.
