Vigan makes it to next round of New7Wonders cities search

Thanks to support from Filipinos, Vigan City in Ilocos Sur has made it to the penultimate round of the search for the world's New7Wonders Cities.

New7Wonders posted on its Facebook page early Wednesday (PHL time) the list of 14 official finalists, which included the northern Philippine city.

 
In alphabetical order, the 14 official finalists were listed as:
 
  • Barcelona (Spain)
  • Beirut (Lebanon)
  • Chicago (United States)
  • Doha (Qatar)
  • Durban (South Africa)
  • Havana (Cuba)
  • Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)
  • La Paz (Bolivia)
  • London (United Kingdom)
  • Mexico City (Mexico)
  • Perth (Australia)
  • Quito (Ecuador)
  • Reykjavik (Iceland)
  • Vigan (Philippines).

UNESCO heritage site
 
Vigan has been inscribed in the World Heritage List by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) since 1999.
 
According to UNESCO, the city "represents a unique fusion of Asian building design and construction with European colonial architecture and planning." It was included on the heritage list for being "an exceptionally intact and well preserved example of a European trading town in East and South-East Asia."
