More and more people are choosing to travel solo in the Philippines

More and more people are choosing to travel solo in the Philippines, according to online travel booking platform agoda.

In a press statement, agoda revealed that their booking data shows there’s been a 45 percent increase in one-person bookings since 2016.

Angeles is the most popular domestic destination, growing 55 percent, with Palawan (46 percent) and Batangas (41 percent) following close behind.

While Japan is the top destination among solo Filipino travelers, according for 21 percent of all international solo bookings — growing 47 percent in 2017 — Taiwan, South Korea and Indonesia have been identified as the fastest growing international destinations for solo travelers.

Not very surprising for the Philippine market: Taiwan has allowed visa-free entry to Filipinos, South Korea has waived visa requirements for Filipino until April, and there are more flights offered from Philippines to Indonesia.

The solo travel trend in the Philippines isn’t surprising, though. According to Google trends, there’s been a solid growth of interest in solo travel over the past 10 years. Lonely Planet in 2016 reported solo travel was going to be the key trend of 2017, with women leading the pack. — LA, GMA News
