Traveling with kids: 5 tips from fashion designer Amina Aranaz-Alunan

For a lot of families, summer is when there's enough time to travel with the kids, go on road trips to visit their grandmothers in the provinces, or take them out for a quick beach weekend.

For a lot of parents, all that also means extra stress: packing for the kids, creating itineraries that will please everybody in the family, and having extra cash.

Fashion designer Amina Aranaz-Alunan recently shared a few tips on how to enjoy better the family time. Clearly, the mother of three isn’t a Cathay Pacific ambassador and for nothing.

1. Don’t overthink packing. Where before Amina would plan outfits for each trip to a T, these days, she’s learned to take it easy. “I just bring everything out of the closet and [spread them out] on the capret, look at everything from the top, and just grab what seems to match,” Amina says. The process, she says is much for efficient given she’s “usually in a rush to pack for myself.”

2. Discover OOTDs bigger, more important function. Says Amina, there’s a bigger reason for dressing up her children in the same outfit, other than making for cute Instagram posts. It helps her spot them in a crowd, in case they get lost. But in case you’re met with rebellious wails…

3. …Assert your role. “My eldest son, he’s 11 now, is starting to complain about it. But I’m the one who packs for them, so sorry!”

4. Wear flats. Travelers should not only pack for the weather of the destination and the length of their stays, but for the pace and nature of their travels. With kids in tow, Amina recommends swapping heels for flats. “It just makes more sense! “ That’s true. With kids in tow, half a day at the museum is never just half a day at the museum.

5. Know that sometimes, your kids can save the day. Amina shares one special episode in their recent travels that one of her sons made possible. “There was a time wherein my husband desperately wanted to eat in a certain restaurant abroad, but it was closed and we were flying out the next day. One of our sons walked with him to the restaurant and convinced the restaurant owner to let our family go in. The owner relented and opened it for us!” — LA, GMA News
