Ookla speed test shows PLDT, Smart clocking in fastest connectivity in H1

Ookla, the global leader in mobile and broadband network intelligence, testing applications and technology, has released the results of Speedtest Awards with PLDT Inc. registering the fastest fixed network speeds in the first half of the year and subsidiary Smart Communications Inc. the fastest in terms of mobile network.

According to the Speedtest Awards presented by Ookla, PLDT won the fixed network connectivity for the first six months of the year in the Philippines.

“To win this award, PLDT achieved a Speed Score of 20.44, with top speeds of 51.36 Mbps (megabits per second) for download and 54.22 Mbps for upload,” Ookla said on Wedensday.

The Speed Score incorporates a measure of each provider’s internet speeds—90% attributed to the download speed, and 10% to upload speed.

Ookla said it took into account the results of various Speedtest applications connected to a fixed network, including tests taken on mobile phones over a Wi-Fi connection for the speed tests.

PLDT was followed by SKY with a Speed Score of 11.76, SmartBro with 11.07, and Globe with 10.04.

GMA News Online has contacted Globe for a statement on this development but the telco has declined to make a comment.

Only those considered as “top carriers” or those with 3% or more of total test samples in the market were included in the report.

In terms of the mobile data network, Smart—the mobile unit of PLDT Inc.—had the highest internet speeds, Ookla said.

“To win this award, Smart achieved a Speed Score of 17.07, with average speeds of 19.33 Mbps for download and 9.16 Mbps for upload,” said Ookla.

User-initiated tests were carried on the iOS and Android mobile applications during the period to determine the network speeds.

Smart’s main competitor Globe Telecom Inc. registered a speed score of 10.05.

“Our network investments have considerably improved customer experience so that they can now watch videos without buffering, update their social media accounts, or easily check their email and open attachments while on-the-go,” Mario Tamayo, PLDT and Smart senior vice president for Network Planning and Engineering, said in a separate statement.

“Now that our subscribers use more data, and as we continue to bring in new customers, we have to ensure they get fast and reliable connection all the time. We continue to build and expand our fiber and LTE network to meet those needs,” he added.

PLDT has announced a historic capital expenditure program of P78.4 billion this 2019, a chunk of which will be for network and technology platforms. —VDS, GMA News
