PHL in good position for 5G rollout in SE Asia —Ericsson

The Philippines is in a favorable position for the rollout of fifth-generation (5G) wireless connectivity in Southeast Asia, Swedish information technology firm Ericsson said Thursday.

"The Philippines is in a good position from a spectrum point-of-view," Ericsson Philippines country head Martin Wiktorin said in a media roundtable in Taguig City.

"That's why it is the first 5G launch in Southeast Asia," Wiktorin said.

In June, telecommunications giant Globe Telecom launched its 5G fixed wireless broadband service, making the Philippines the first country in Southeast Asia to experience the latest network technology.

The Ericsson Philippines country head noted that since telcos already own the spectrum, it would be easier for them to rollout 5g unlike in other countries, where they still need their governments to assign the spectrum.

"The environment is very good in the Philippines... it really depends on operators not from someone else," Wiktorin said.

For his part, Ericsson head of Southeast Asia, Oceania, and India Nunzio Mirtillo said that in other countries in Southeast Asia, the spectrum is not assigned yet unlike in the Philippines.

"The service providers already own the spectrum so they can decide to launch tomorrow, which is an advantage compared to other countries," Mirtillo said.

According to a study by Ericsson, the business potential of 5G can be translated into $619 billion in potential revenues by 2026.

Telecom operators can also profit an additional 36% revenue from 5G-enabled market opportunities by 2026.

Asked if there are specific study regarding the potential revenue in the Philippines from 5G rollout, Mirtillo said the company's study covers the entire globe and it has not yet made any specific study on the business potential of the new generation connectivity in the country.

Nevertheless, Mirtillo said Ericsson is optimistic on the potential of the Philippines for 5G connectivity. — MDM, GMA News
