SEC OKs incorporation of entity for mobile number portability

By TED CORDERO,GMA News

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Tuesday gave the greenlight for the creation of an entity which will be the mobile number portability service provider.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, Globe Telecom Inc. said it has received the approval of the SEC on the incorporation of Telecommunications Connectivity Inc.

The entity incorporation is in relation to the earlier announcement made by Globe that it, along with PLDT Inc. mobile unit Smart Communications and third telco player Dito Telecommunity Corp., tapped

Florida-based Syniverse Technologies as mobile number portability service provider.

"As mentioned in our earlier disclosure, this is to enable number porting services in line with the new mobile number portability initiative of the government or Republic Act 11202 also known as the 'Mobile Number Portability Act'," Globe said.

President Rodrigo Duterte in February signed into law the Mobile Number Portability Act (MNP), which allows mobile network subscribers to retain their numbers for life despite switching subscription plans or between telecom service providers.

The implementing rules and regulation (IRR) of the measure mandated that mobile service providers comply with the provisions of the law and set up a mechanism for this by July 2, 2019.

In June, Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Undersecretary Eliseo Rio Jr. said applications for lifetime mobile phone numbers could start by January next year.

The telcos will equally share the capital expenditure for the software, hardware, and other facilities required by the mobile number portability service provider, but the operating and maintenance costs will have to first be agreed upon. —LDF, GMA News
