Business group backs August 24 class opening

The Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) supports the opening of classes  on August 24 with schools expected to strictly implement the health measures against the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

In a statement on Wednesday, PBEd said the youth’s education should not be delayed for too long despite the pandemic crisis, while also acknowledging the health concerns of students.

“PBEd therefore supports the original decision of the government to open classes in August assuming no significant worsening of conditions occurs, with schools strictly implementing appropriate physical distancing measures in coordination with their local governments,” it said.

The group pointed out that “decisive comprehensive plans” for education are instrumental to ensure a more inclusive, efficient, and resilient system to pass on to future generations.

“We enjoin all sectors of Philippine society to help build back a better Philippine education system," it added.

The PBEd noted that the Philippines was already in a learning crisis even before the pandemic, citing the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 results.

Based on the report, the Philippines ranked lowest in math and science, while over 80% of Filipino students fell below the minimum level of reading proficiency.

The PBEd said it supports the Department of Education's (DepEd) Learning Continuity Plan that utilizes various learning modalities to ensure the continuation of learning.

“We likewise support [Commission on Higher Education's] push for Flexible Learning, which utilizes various learning modalities aside from online platforms, such as home activities and learning packets,” the PBEd said.

On Wednesday, DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction Diosdado San Antonio said that preparations for the opening of classes on August 24 is centered on the production of "self-learning" modules.

“Ang pinaghahandaan po natin talaga ay ‘yung printed self-learning modules na gagawing available sa mga mag-aaral na walang gadget. Kaya ‘yun po talaga ang ginagawa namin ngayon,” he said. -Joviland Rita/MDM, GMA News
