San Miguel against gambling in proposed Bulacan ecozone

The San Miguel Corporation is against any form of gambling activities in the proposed Bulacan economic zone, its government relations unit head Melissa Encanto-Tagarda said Monday.

The conglomerate made the position after Senator Joel Villanueva mentioned during the Senate hearing of the Committee on Economic Affairs that many groups in the province are against gambling.

"In San Miguel Corporation po, we are not in favor of gambling and POGOs (Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators) and all those in the ecozone but we also have to consider po that the Board will be the one in charge of these locators," Tagarda said.

"The ecozone will not be governed by the San Miguel Corporation but the ecozone will be governed by the province of Bulacan together with other sectors of government and they will be the ones who will be running this ecozone and not San Miguel Corporation," she added.

San Miguel Holdings Corp. operations head Edgar Doña also affirmed the said position.

"As a matter of policy, we will not allow gambling and POGOs," he said.

Earlier this month, the House of Representatives approved on third reading the bill establishing the Bulacan Airport City Special Economic Zone And Freeport, principally authored by Bulacan Representative Jonathan Sy-Alvarado.

It shall cover the proposed New Manila International Airport, the Airport City to be developed adjacent to the airport, and lands adjacent to the Airport City.

The land covering the airport and the Airport City is owned by the Silver Tides Holding Corporation, a subsidiary of San Miguel Corporation, Tagarda said.

"The ecozone can comprise of land that will not be belonging to the airport and the Airport City," she added.

During the same hearing, Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando said the provincial government has not been consulted yet regarding the proposed economic zone. The SMC committed to coordinate with Fernando regarding the project.—AOL, GMA News
