NTC urges telcos to have enough personnel, generators in areas affected by Jolina

The National Telecommunications Commission urged all public telecommunications entities to ensure that there are enough technical personnel, standby generators, tools, and spare equipment in areas affected by Typhoon Jolina.

"You are directed to fast-track the repair and restoration of telecommunication services in the service areas severely affected by the typhoon," it said in a memorandum.

The NTC also directed telcos to deploy "Libreng Tawag and Libreng Charging Stations" in strategic areas affected by the typhoon.

"The Commission will expect status updates every six hours of ongoing restoration activities being performed on your network and facilities and a timeline for the full restoration service," it said.

Also on Tuesday, Globe Telecom and Smart said they are preparing to provide assistance to areas that may be affected by Jolina.

Pangilinan-led PLDT Inc. and its wireless unit Smart Communications Inc. are mobilizing personnel, equipment, and relief aid and are ready to deploy free calls, charging, and wifi stations to affected residents.

Ayala-led Globe Telecom Inc. will deploy free calls, charging, and wifi services in Samar September 7 to 8, at 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

At 8 p.m. on Tuesday, PAGASA said the center of Jolina was located 65 kilometers east northeast of Romblon, Romblon with maximum sustained winds of 100 km per hour near the center, gustiness of up to 125 kph, and central pressure of 996 hPa.
