PLDT to offer 10,000 Mbps fiber-optic internet service starting December

Telco giant PLDT Inc.’s home broadband services arm PLDT Home on Friday said it would offer the first 10,000 megabits per second (Mbps) fiber-optic internet service in the Philippines.

In a statement, PLDT said the new service puts the country next to first-world nations such as South Korea, Japan, Sweden, Norway, Italy, New Zealand, and the USA, in terms of having access to ultra-fast home internet speed.

The telco said PLDT Home pilots its 10,000 Mbps service in Metro Manila in December and will then implement further expansions in other key cities outside Metro Manila such as Cebu and Davao in 2022.

“We at PLDT continue to play an active role in shaping the future of our country and leading the way towards a connected nation. We are doing all these for our north star – our customers: business owners, professionals, tech mavericks with very large homes, multiple high-bandwidth users with multiple screens,” said PLDT president and CEO Alfredo Panlilio.

“And with all that life requires of them, they need the fastest home broadband powered by the fastest network. And we are more than ready to give them what they need – all 10,000 of it,” he added.

The planned rollout of the new service, the telco said, is the culmination of PLDT Home’s year-long network expansion program in 2021.

“Consistent with our commitment to provide superior technology to address the Filipinos’ growing digital connectivity needs, PLDT Home continues to innovate and make a difference in the lives of our customers,” said Butch Jimenez, senior vice president and head of PLDT Home Business.

“With our all-new, upgraded, and fastest internet speed, Filipino homes will now be able to experience and enjoy the future — that is the smart home,” Jimenez said.

Leading market and consumer data provider Statista.com defines “smart home” as a private household controlled, monitored, and regulated through networked devices.

Statista is predicting a household penetration rate in the Philippines of 7.5% for 2021 and 14.2% or 3.4 million active smart homes by 2025. — VBL, GMA News
