The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) received an unsolicited proposal for the development of a potential new water source for Luzon and Metro Manila.

“Nag-submit po ang isang private proponent ng unsolicited proposal to develop more water sources for MWSS para ma-extend natin ang water supply natin hanggang 2050,” MWSS Deputy Administrator Jose Dorado Jr. said during the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City.

“Ito po yung tinatawag nating Kanan-Agos [project]. This is an unsolicited proposal,” Dorado said.

(This is what we call the Kanan-Agos project.)

The MWSS official said the proposal is now under review by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).

For his part, National Water Resources Board Executive Director Sevillo David Jr. said the potential water supply that could be generated from the Kanan River is around 3,000 million liters per day (MLD).

The Kanan River forms part of the Kaliwa-Kanan-Agos River Basin in Quezon province.

A counterpart project, the controversial China-funded Kaliwa Dam, is currently under construction. The Kaliwa Dam is expected to be completed by 2026 and operational by early 2027.

The project is now 22% complete, according to the MWSS. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
