DOLE pushes good practices code to improve BPO-ICT education

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz urged business process outsourcing, or BPO, companies to adopt the Department of Labor and Employment’s Voluntary Code of Good Practices because the code provides a solution to the shortfall of qualified workers in the country's emerging industry.

She said that the code pushes for improved partnerships with the academe in order to improve the curriculum of learning institutions and upgrade the skills of its graduates.

Baldoz said "such measure will enhance jobseekers’ capability and employability in the industry."

"The code provides that the ICT (Information Communications Technology) will work towards building a collaborative partnership with the academe to enhance the skills and preparedness of faculty and students alike through faculty internship programs, career talks, technical forums, and curriculum review," said Baldoz in a statement on Monday.

Baldoz said so far, only BPO-ICT companies in Region 6 have adopted the code that lays down the ITC members' commitment to establish voluntary parameters and standards on the social and employment aspects in the BPO/ICT industry in the region.

The BPO-ICT companies which committed themselves to the code are Teleperformance, Transcom, Teletech, Focus-Direct and BENEFIT. Atty. Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, chairman of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Association of the Philippines also signed the code. — DVM, GMA News
