DOLE: Base career choices on labor market info

Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz is encouraging students to make career choices based on labor market information such as the information posted in DOLE’s Bureau of Local Employment Career Guide webpage.

 

The information posted here will enable students to get a good grasp of the in-demand college and technical-vocational courses that will lead them to productive income-earning opportunities after graduation.

 

The Career Guide cites such career paths as cyber-services and creative industries as occupations expected to absorb more workers and create more employment opportunities up to 2020.

 

“It's about time that our high school students also soak up on latest labor market information. Instead of taking popular courses, those less considered courses may prove to be the best paying and the most productive ones. They may even venture into part-time careers and entrepreneurship opportunities that are usually overlooked,” she added

 

Also, the information provided by the Career Guide webpage helps resolve the jobs and skills mismatch problem. It gives guidance to high school seniors as to what courses to pursue and skills to develop so it “would easily fit them into jobs or entrepreneurship opportunities in the labor market” when they graduate.

 

Baldoz particularly noted the labor information which indicates that the business process outsourcing industry offers starting salaries ranging from P12,000-P20,000. 

 

Computer Science and technology-related course graduates are also in-demand in a wide range of business sectors with the increasing need for specialized software developers and designers who can write programs according to the company’s specifications. Salaries may range up to P50,000 for successful and experienced designers and developers.

 

“If they are into administrative and organizational work, they may consider a path towards becoming a virtual assistant who provides online creative and/or technical services to clients, or a web content writer if they have the passion for online research, writing, and editing,” added Baldoz.

"The labor market needs tech-savvy and technologically-proficient graduates with the passion to develop their own skills and seize their own opportunities to keep abreast with the world’s technological advancements,” concluded Baldoz — DVM, GMA News
