Globe, DOTC sign agreement for use of MRT stations for internet infra

Globe Telecom Inc. and the Department of Transportation and Communication's (DOTC) Metro Railway Transit (MRT 3) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to allow the telecommunications services provider to use train stations to host network infrastructure.

"This agreement with MRT 3 would significantly improve the mobile internet experience and connectivity of the commuting public," Globe said in a statement on Thursday.

The MOU will allow the telecommunication company to deploy wireless internet infrastructure in all MRT 3 stations along EDSA.

“This partnership is a milestone that is expected to improve the experience of the public riding the MRT, including those in the communities surrounding the MRT stations," said Joel Agustin, Globe's SVP for Program Governance, Network Technical Group.

"With the support of government agencies such as the operators of the MRT 3, we hope to change the experience of our customers in high foot traffic areas and strategic locations such as public transport systems,” Agustin added.

He also said the project will also help address existing challenges on mobile signals along Metro Manila's main thoroughfare especially during rush hours.

The infrastructure build is expected to take five years and will extend network coverage to more areas that currently have no connection or irregular service. — APG, GMA News
