Malacañang on Friday said that Philippine Airlines' P6 billion settlement on its arrears would help the country's "Build Build Build" infrastructure program.

In a statement, presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said the settlement was a clear reminder that citizens would cooperate when government prioritizes national interests.

"PAL has agreed to pay in full the P6B claims of the CAAP/MIAA, which the Department of Transportation (DOTr) accepted, which will go a long way to help build much needed infrastructure to support our economic capabilities," he said.

"We enjoin one and all to set aside self-interest and together build a nation worthy of the next generation," he added.

The settlement comes one day before the end of the 10-day ultimatum given by President Rodrigo Duterte for PAL to pay  navigational and other charges payable to CAAP and MIAA.

Duterte last week warned that he would close the airport, referring to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2 which PAL has been exclusively using, if business tycoon Lucio Tan won't pay his unpaid obligations to the government. —JST, GMA News
