DBM releasing P490M to DPWH for Boracay road rehab

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) is releasing around P490 million to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the rehabilitation of the circumferential road in the Boracay island.

Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno said on Wednesday the fund will be released to the DPWH this week.

The money is on top of the P50 million under the 2018 budget to improve the 5.2-kilometer Boracay Circumferential Road and fast-track its completion while the island is closed for six months.

Diokno noted the DPWH sought additional funds for the project as a result of recent developments in the island. “We did not expect there will be this Boracay closure and rehabilitation,” he said.

The DBM is now processing the fund request of the DPWH, subject to the approval of the Office of the President. It will be charged against the savings generated by the department in fiscal year 2018, Diokno said.

Citing the DPWH, the Budget chief said the project will incorporate an improved drainage and sewerage system along the main road to contain in-land flooding.

The project is divided into three sections: The first phase starting from Cagban Port to Rotonda is around 1.4 kms, while phase two is around 1.9 kms from Rotonda to Baranagy Balabag and phase three is 1.9 kms from Barangay Balabag to Barangay Yapak.

On April 27, the DBM released around P448 million to the Department of Labor and Employment to cover the financial assistance for 17,735 affected Boracay residents and workers.

The money was charged against the 2018 Contingent Fund amounting to P13 billion under the national budget. —VDS, GMA News
