The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Tuesday launched an “enhanced” version of the P5 New Generation Currency (NGC) coins.

In a press conference in Manila City, the central bank unveiled the new P5 coin, which is nonagon shaped or has nine sides.

Made out of nickel plated steel, the coin is 25.0 millimeters in diameter and weighs 7.30 grams.

The obverse side features a portrait of Philippine hero Andres Bonifacio, while the reverse side features a rendition of the BSP logo and the Tayabak or Jade vine.

“This reaffirms the BSP’s commitment to excellence, but also to listen to the public’s observations as it endeavors to bring central banking closer to the people,” said BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno.

The central bank originally released the NGC coins in March 2018, which it said have enhanced aesthetics and security features.

But a lawmaker called on the central bank to immediately order a full recall of the NGC coins because of their supposed design flaws which caused public confusion. —VDS, GMA News
