PHL eyes joining field trials for African swine fever vaccine —DA

The Department of Agriculture has expressed intent to participate in the field trials for an African swine fever (ASF) vaccine being developed in the UK.

In a statement, the DA said a new study by the Pirbright Institute in the UK has shown that 100% of pigs immunized with a vaccine developed at the institute were protected from a lethal dose of the ASF virus.

“We would like to express our optimism on the development of African Swine Fever (ASF) vaccine,” it said.

“The Department of Agriculture is looking forward to collaborate and take part in the field trials of the prospective ASF vaccine developed once available,” it added.

The field trials will provide first-hand information on the efficacy of the vaccine against the strain present in the Philippines, according to the DA.

It said will be closely collaborating with the research institutions on the matter.

In the Philippines, the ASF has brought about the death of more than 200,000 pigs across 25 provinces.

Due to the ASF problem, the DA is expecting a 31-day shortage of pork supply after the end of 2020.

“The unavailability of a commercial vaccine has called for stricter biosecurity measures and culling of susceptible animals to curb the proliferation of this deadly virus,” the Agriculture department said.

“However, if the said field trials will be successful, we will be able to save not only the lives of the pigs but the livelihood of our swine raisers as well,” it said.

The DA said it will continue providing support to the Philippine livestock sector in the midst of the ASF virus.

“Rest assured that we will continue with our persistent efforts in the eradication of ASF and preservation of our swine industry,” it said. — Ted Cordero/BM, GMA News
