Customs gets P375M revenue from disposition of overstaying cargo

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) said Tuesday it has generated P375 million in revenue from public auction of disposed overstaying containers in several ports.

The BOC said its Bureau of Customs- Assessment and Operations Coordinating Group (AOCG) recorded a total of 1,317 disposed containers constituting 23% of the total abandoned or overstaying containers recorded from January 2020.

“The actions taken by seven of 17 ports in the disposition of overstaying containers resulted to revenue generation from public auctions amounting to P375,796,466.77 from 656 containers, condemnation of 427 containers, and donation of the remaining 234 containers,” the Customs said.

Under Customs Memorandum Order No. 10-2020, overstaying cargoes for more than 30 days from the date of discharge which have not been withdrawn within the specified period of time shall be tagged abandoned, and upon finality of the “Decree of Abandonment,” the BOC shall then make the proper determination as to its disposition.

Under Section 1141 of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, goods subject to disposition may be donated, declared for official use by the bureau, or sold at public auction, while goods suitable for shelter, or consisting of foodstuffs, clothing materials, or medicines may be donated to Department of Social Welfare and Development. -NB, GMA News
