DTI: Food supply sufficient amid looming ECQ

As Filipinos stock up on instant noodles and canned goods amid the looming enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) assured consumers there is a sufficient supply of food.

According to Mav Gonzales’ report on “24 Oras Weekend,” the DTI also has a pop-up store along with the Agriculture Department where Filipinos may buy frozen meat products.

“Puwede kayo bumili ng mas marami o kung gaano karami ‘yung madadala niyo (You may buy as many as you need),” Trade and Industry Secretary Ruth Castello said.

The National Capital Region will be placed under the strictest enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) classification from August 6 to 20 amid the threat of the more infectious Delta variant.

While some Filipinos are stockpiling on food, some establishments are seeking more customers before the ECQ.

“Makaipon pa kami ng panggastos namin sa loob ng two weeks na sinasabi. Sana hindi na rin po ma-extend ‘yung sinasabing lockdown,” Jane Alemania, a salon worker, said.

(We hope to earn enough to last the two-week ECQ. And I hope the lockdown no longer gets extended.)

“Sana po mabigyan kami ng ayuda. Paano po ‘yung two weeks, saan kami kukuha ng pang araw-araw namin,” Aiza Valenciano, meanwhile, said.\

(We hope to get financial aid. Where will we get the money we need for two weeks?)

Restaurant delivery riders who get paid on a daily basis also expressed worry over the future financial situation.

“Wala na po kaming kakainan po. Sa isang buwan po niyan baka limang araw lang po ‘yung sasahurin namin," said delivery rider Reymel Maldo.
