DOE: Gov't energy management program seen to save P840 million a year

An official from the Department of Energy (DOE) bared long term policy directions to address the consecutive weeks of fuel price hikes.

DOE Undersecretary Gerardo Erguiza said it implemented the government energy management program in which the government offices need to save at least 10% of energy or equivalent to P840 million a year.

“Una mayroon tayong existing platform na generally sinasabi namin magtipid tayo kasi pagnagtipid ka bababa yung demand so yung supply na hinahabol mo hindi mo na kailangang habulin and we have now the Energy Conservation and Efficiency Act of 2019,”  Erguiza said in an episode of the Mangahas Interviews on Friday.

(First we have an existing platform that generally states that let's save because when you save the demand will decrease so the supply you are chasing you don't have to chase and we now have the Energy Conservation and Efficiency Act of 2019.)

“At inumpisahan recently ang department nag-issue ng isang advisory na mayroon tayong tinatawag na sa government pa lang ito, na government energy management program, na ang gobyerno ang kanilang mga opisina ginagawa nila and equipment ay magtitipid ng 10% and this will be equivalent to around P840 million a year or equivalent to 24 megawatts,” he added.

Erguiza then encouraged the public to save energy, power, and fuel amid the increasing prices of fuel.

“Doon sa demand natin so pinalabas po ng DOE yan reminding everybody and the government, the offices to save energy, power, and fuel,” he added.

Philippine oil firms implemented on Tuesday a rollback in pump prices of petroleum products, but this will not be enough to offset the 11 weeks of successive hikes.

The rollbacks come after 11 straight weeks of increases, and are not enough to offset the increases implemented last Tuesday alone when gasoline prices were hiked by P7.10 per liter and diesel by P13.15 per liter. —NB, GMA News
