Marcos: LGUs can lead the way as economy goes into post pandemic

By GMA News

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday urged local government units to lead the country as the economy emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a speech before officers of the League of Cities of the Philippines, Marcos said that some of the “best talent” in government came from among local officials.

“I have always said that some of the best talent in government is in the LGUs, is in the cities, is in the governors, is in the mayors,” Marcos said.

“Let’s keep that truism in our minds and make it and show to people that is what exactly what will going to happen,” he added.

“The LGUs can lead the way when it comes to changing our country from the bottom up and that is what we are going to do because we are doing nothing less now than transforming our economy into a post pandemic,” Marcos said.

LPC National President and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, who is currently in self-quarantine after contracting COVID-19, joined the meeting via video conference.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, the LPC Executive Vice President, relayed the LPC’s concerns.

Marcos earlier called on local officials to support the government’s COVID-19 booster campaign in order for face-to-face classes to resume safely and for the economy to fully reopen.

He also urged officials of the local government units to help agencies replicate the massive COVID-19 vaccine rollout conducted last year.

Marcos also wants LGUs to conduct large-scale immunization drives for booster shots targeting school children so they can safely go back to school. —Richa Noriega/NB, GMA News
