DTI mulls certification for parols, reminds buyers to check lights for PS, ICC marks

By JOVILAND RITA, GMA Integrated News

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Wednesday said it is studying whether to establish a system for the standardization and certification of parol products.

“Pinag-aaralan pa po natin. Siyempre yung benefit nyan sa consumer, yun po ang pinaka-objective natin [We are studying it. Of course, our objective is to benefit the consumer],” DTI Undersecretary Ruth Castelo said at a televised public briefing.

According to her, the DTI will check if there are existing international standards that it can adapt and customize to be more applicable to parol products.

Castelo also reminded the public to check for the Philippine Standard (PS) mark or the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) sticker on Christmas lights before buying them, for guaranteed safety and quality.

“Kapag wala po nito sana hindi na po nila bilhin kasi sigurado pong hindi 'yan dumaan sa certification process or bumagsak ka sa wala silang PS mark or ICC mark,” she added.

(If they don’t see these, they should not but it because surely the product did not undergo certification process or failed it that is why it does not have a PS or ICC mark.)

Castelo said DTI recently released lists of certified sellers and retailers of Christmas lights with PS mark and ICC sticker. — BM, GMA Integrated News
