LTO to boost IT for online driver’s license, car registration processes

The Land Transportation Office is set to modernize its information technology  system to make more efficient transactions possible.

In a statement on Wednesday, LTO chief Edgar Galvante said that the enhancement of the agency's IT system will improve services, promote transparency, prevent corruption and allow drivers and car owners to transact with much ease and convenience.

With the IT system enhancement, driver's license application and car registration services  can already be done online.

"It is being done abroad, why not here?”

Also, Galvante said that idea has been around for some time already, and that the agency is working to make it a reality.

"We are gearing towards online registration of driver’s license application and car registration. We need a credible IT to be able to enforce that,” Galvante said.

Moreover, he said that the driver's licenses with five-year validity will be available by the end of the year.

For his part, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade has expressed support for online driver’s license application.

In a speech before transport cooperative delegates and government officials at the 3rd National Congress for the Transport Cooperative Sector on June 3, the Tugade said that the Department of Transportation is looking into online driver’s license applications.

"Pinag-aaralan namin na sa hinaharap, kung wala kang violation, online na lang ang application ng lisensya," he said. —John Ted Cordero/LBG, GMA News
