OPTION TO LOCAL MANUFACTURING

DTI looks at importing jeepneys for PUV modernization program

The government is looking at importing new jeepneys for the public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program as an option if local manufacturers decide not to participate in the project, a top official of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said Tuesday.

"That could be an option. Pwedeng mag-import," DTI Undersecretary for Consumer Protection Group Teodoro Pascua told reporters in a press briefing in Makati City.

"Kaya meron nag comment from another country that they're willing to submit their own prototype," Pascua noted.

The Trade official made the statement when asked about options regarding the PUV modernization program.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) launched last month the PUV modernization program, setting higher safety standards and introducing a new design for the benefit of commuters.

However, Pascua noted that the options are subject to discussions with the DOTr.

A draft blue print of the modern jeepney design was submitted to manufacturers and various transport groups for their comments, he said.

"Binigay na sa kanila and they need to submit their comments by August 15," he said. — VDS, GMA News
