With quarantine restrictions still in place, a number of businesses have shifted their operations online to minimize unnecessary outside exposure, amid the coronavirus pandemic.

According to online job portal JobStreet, there has been a 63% increase in education-related job posts as of May, making it the third top-hiring industry currently.

"With talents prioritizing opportunities that allow them to work remotely, online teaching jobs have become one of the top choices of people to apply for," it said.

In line with this, JobStreet released a list of what to prepare when applying for an online teaching job:

Skills

"While most online teaching jobs accept fresh graduates with no teaching experience, expect that hirers will still assess applicants based on their speaking and grammar skills, and their overall grasp of the English language," the online portal said.

Employers may ask for language certificates such as Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL), which may be advantages but not requirements.

"Online teaching employers will also look at other requirements that will be needed for you to secure a position as an online teacher," said JobStreet.

"Applicants should also expect the company conducting an internet speed test during the application process to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted class sessions if you get hired," it added.

JobStreet said jobseekers should prepare a good working laptop or computer with a webcam, headset, microphone, a reliable internet connection, and a quiet space conducive for a virtual class.

Flexible schedule

"Most companies would require employees to be available at these peak hours such as 7pm to 9pm on weekdays and 9am to 9pm on weekends. Whereas, full time online teachers still render 8-hour shifts every day," JobStreet said.

It noted, however, that most online teaching jobs will allow employees to plot their own schedule and choose the best time for them to hold sessions.

According to JobStreet, the median salary for online teaching jobs available on the portal is P22,316, but this would depend on the bookings or classes conducted in a day.

"Candidates who may be considering applying for an online teaching job should expect less pay should they be rendering fewer work hours," it said. — LA, GMA News
