2 Pinoy indie films featured in Chicago film festival

Two Filipino films figured prominently in the ongoing Chicago International Film Festival, North America's oldest competitive international film festival, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

Philippine Consulate General Cultural Officer Berth Salvador attended the screening of the film "Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe" Oct. 13 at the AMC River East 21 Theater. "He was joined by guests, festival organizers and the Filipino-American community in Chicago who came in droves to show their support for the films," the DFA said in its website. A second film, "The Thank You Girls," was also shown at the film festival. The DFA said "The Rapture of Fe (Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe)" by Alvin Yapan, is the story of Fe caught between her violent husband and a dithering young lover. Fe’s life takes a scary turn when baskets of black fruit begin unexpectedly appearing at her door. At first the enigma is endearing, but soon Fe realizes someone sinister is looking to join her love triangle. The 78-minute film earned the Special Jury Prize at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival 2009 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines last July 17 to 26. On the other hand, "Thank You Girls" is a 105-minute movie shown in Visayan, with English subtitles. It tells of the celebration of a singular family of drag queens, following a group of beauty pageant contestants who leave the big city in search of fame, glamor, and adoration out in the rural provinces. "This lighthearted, brightly colored romp draws us in – past the girls’ glamorous facades to their destructive everyday habits – as they tear through the Filipino countryside. Mr. Charliebebs Gohetia directed the film," the DFA said. At the film festival, the Philippine Consulate assisted Alemberg Ang, Executive Producer of "Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe," in coordinating with the CIFF’s organizers and provided him with a list of print and television media network in the Midwest for his promotional campaign of his movie. The 45th CIFF is presented by Cinema/Chicago, a non-profit, tax-exempt cultural and educational organization seeking to fostering better communication between people of diverse cultures through the art forms of film and video. - GMANews.TV
