Comelec extends period for political conventions

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has granted a request by a political party to extend the holding of political conventions for another week.

Interviewed at the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Comelec Chairman Juan Andres Bautista said the decision was in answer to the request by Centrist Democratic Party (CDP), although it will be applicable to all political groups.

"Humingi ng extension ang isang political party, ‘yung Centrist ni Congressman Rufus Rodriguez, at pinayagan sila ng Comelec," Bautista said.

"We have extended the whole political convention until October 8," he added.

Bautista said the Comelec en banc approved the request on Tuesday. He also described CDP's request as "reasonable."

“Kasi sa aming palagay healthy rin naman magkaroon ng mga conventions [because] this is part and parcel of political process. We think naman that is reasonable request and so kahapon pinagpasyahan ng Comelec en banc na pagbigyan ['yung request], but this of course applicable to everybody,” he said.

Based on the original Calendar of Activities released by the Comelec, political meetings are only allowed from September 12 to 30.  —KBK, GMA News
