UP team wins int'l moot court contest in Tokyo


A team from the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law topped other Asian countries at the prestigious International Moot Court Competition - Asia Cup 2007, the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). The competition, held in Tokyo, Japan from August 20-21, tested law students’ skills in hypothetical cases regarding international law on human rights and humanitarian affairs. “Your win at the Asia Cup International Moot Court Competition brought prestige and honor not just to yourselves and your school, but also to our country," said Chargé d’Affaires, Gina A. Jamoralin during a function at the Philippine Embassy for the winning team. The Philippines’ win is a follow-up to the 2003 Asia Cup Moot where UP also emerged victorious. The UP team included law students Anya Marasigan Palileo, Janice Chua Lee, Anna Lorem Reyes Ramos, and Maricel Reasol Seno. They were given the Foreign Minister’s Prize after presenting their written and oral arguments against Thailand ’s Chulalongkorn University during the final round. Other competitors included delegates from the People’s Republic of China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Japan, and Singapore. The annual competition was organized by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is highly regarded among law circles in the Asian region. The 2007 panel of judges was composed of International law experts including: Dr. Jean-Marie Henckaerts of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Ambassador Chusei Yamada of the United Nations International Law Commission, Ambassador Tetsuyo Endo of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Dr. Umesh Kadam of the ICRC. - Mark J.
