DepEd cancels classes in Metro Manila effective 12 noon

(Updated 11:23 a.m.) The Department of Education has suspended classes from preschool to high school levels in public and private schools in Metro Manila effective 12 noon Friday.

Forecasts of heavy rain in the afternoon in the National Capital Region prompted the DepEd-NCR to declare the suspension.

Department of Education Metro Manila director Elena Ruiz said the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration had forecast heavy rain for Friday afternoon.

"Dahil sa sinasabi ng PAGASA na magkakaroon ng maintinding ulan mamayang hapon, pasiya naming suspendihin ang klaseng panghapon sa NCR (Due to PAGASA's forecast of heavy rain in the afternoon we decided to suspend afternoon classes)," she said in an interview on dzBB radio.

She said parents in areas where rain is already heavy can fetch their children even before morning classes end.

However, PAGASA forecaster Mario Palafox said the rain is expected to ease Friday evening.

"Inaasahan natin sa maghapon na uulanin tayo sa Metro Manila. Malawak ang kaulapang nakikita nating gumagalaw papuntang Metro Manila (We expect heavy rain in the afternoon, as rain clouds are moving toward Metro Manila)," Palafox said.
PAGASA earlier said scattered rain showers will continue until this weekend. –KG, GMA News
