MMDA officials, priests bless accident-prone parts of EDSA

In a bid to rid Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) of road accidents, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority enlisted Friday the help of Catholic priests in blessing accident-prone areas of the highway.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino and assistant general manager Emerson Carlos led two convoys in going around EDSA and blessing accident-prone sites there.

"Wala sigurong masama kung magbasbas tayo ... Hindi siguro masama kung ilang lugar ay aming balikan at pabendisyunan lalo na ang maraming namatay," Tolentino said in an interview on dzBB radio.

He said the targets of the blessing include the Shaw Boulevard underpass area, Ortigas Avenue, Muñoz (near corner Roosevelt Avenue) in Quezon City, and Magallanes in Makati City.

Only last Wednesday, eight people were hurt while traffic was snarled after a passenger bus crashed at a flyover at EDSA-Ortigas.

Shortly before 6 a.m., the convoys went around parts of EDSA accompanied by Msgr. Salvador Jose and Fr. Roderick Castro.

The convoy led by Carlos went around the Muñoz area where Jose blessed some u-turn slots and the Metro Rail Transit station, dzBB's Allan Gatus reported.

The convoy traveled along the motorcycle lane, with MMDA personnel praying rosaries and carrying Bibles.

On the other hand, Tolentino's convoy traveled along Makati City, going at 10 to 15 kph, dzBB's Manny Vargas reported.

Both convoys were to meet up at the Guadalupe area after the blessing. –KG, GMA News
