Batanes now under Signal No. 2 as ‘Gener’ intensifies

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) placed the Batanes group of islands and three other areas under Storm Signal No. 2 on Sunday afternoon as tropical storm Gener (international name Saola) further gained strength. The state weather bureau said in its 5 p.m. update on Sunday that Gener “poses intense danger to extreme northern Luzon,” packing maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 120 kph. The tropical cyclone was last spotted 380 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan and is slowly moving north-northwest at 15 kph, PAGASA said. Gener is not expected to make landfall in the Philippines, and is projected to be outside the country’s territory by Wednesday afternoon. Other areas under Signal No. 2 are Cagayan, the Calayan group of islands and the Babuyan group of islands. Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over the provinces of Isabela, Kalinga and Apayao. The storm is also expected to bring rains over central and southern Luzon, western Visayas and northern Mindanao. The weather bureau also warned the public against possible flashfloods and landslides, especially in low-lying and mountainous areas. - BM, GMA News
