Wreath-laying at NAIA marks 29th death anniversary of Ninoy Aquino

A wreath-laying rite was scheduled on Tuesday morning at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), where the late Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., father of incumbent President Benigno Aquino III, was assassinated on August 21, 1983. According to a report of radio dzBB's Sam Nielsen, the activities at the NAIA Terminals 1 and 3 were scheduled at 9:00 a.m.

Aquino was assassinated upon returning to the Philippines 29 years ago. His death sparked a series of protests that prompted his widow Corazon to challenge then President Ferdinand Marcos for the presidency in 1986.

Allegations of cheating by Marcos in the 1986 snap elections led to a series of protests that culminated in the February 1986 EDSA Revolution, which ousted Marcos and installed Mrs. Aquino to the presidency.
Wreath-laying program in Manila Meanwhile, in Manila, Mayor Alfredo Lim on Tuesday also led a wreath-laying rite to commemorate the 29th death anniversary of the senator.
Radio dzBB's Manny Vargas said the rite was held at the corner of Roxas Boulevard and Katigbak Drive across the historic Manila Hotel.

Wreaths were placed before the statues of the assassinated former senator and his wife, the late former President Corazon Aquino.

The photos posted on Lim's Twitter account showed that the guests included Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Francis Tolentino, Deputy Speaker Lorenzo Tañada III, former Sen. Ramon Magsaysay Jr., and former Tourism Secretary Gemma Araneta.

Shortly before the program, a fun run in honor of the senator was held from the CCP Complex in Pasay City to the Katigbak Drive area. - VVP, GMA News
