PNoy orders creation of temporary transport terminals to ease Metro Manila traffic

President Benigno Aquino III has ordered the establishment of three temporary transport terminals to decongest traffic in Metro Manila.

In Administrative Order 40 issued last Tuesday, Aquino said these terminals will serve as loading and unloading areas for passengers of provincial buses and Asian utility vehicles (AUVs).

The order, however, did not specify where these terminals will be located.

Under the order, the North Interim Transport Terminal shall be established for provincial buses and AUVs entering Metro Manila via the North Luzon Expressway, MacArthur Highway, Mindanao Avenue, Quirino Avenue, and Commonwealth Avenue.

The South Interim Transport Terminal shall also be built to cater to passengers of provincial buses and AUVs coming from provinces south of Metro Manila and entering via the South Luzon Expressway.

The Southwest Interim Transport Terminal will serve as loading and unloading area for buses and AUVs from provinces south of Metro Manila entering via Coastal Road and/or Manila Cavite Expressway.

Aquino designated the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) to lead the establishment of these temporary transport terminals.

Aquino also ordered the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to "amend the routes and areas of operation of affected provincial buses and AUVs" so that their routes shall end in the temporary terminals.

Last week, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the government  is planning to reduce the number of buses plying the Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) daily from 12,000 to 3,000. — Andreo C. Calonzo/KBK, GMA News
