Contractor in anomalous PNP armored car deal seeks marathon bail hearings

Tyrone Ong, a private contractor to the Philippine National Police detained for graft, has asked the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court to conduct marathon hearings on pending bail petitions.

Ong, along with former PNP Director General Avelino Razon Jr., former directors Geary Barias, Eliseo dela Paz, Reynaldo Varilla, and Charlemagne Alejandrino, were ordered arrested in August over allegedly anomalous repair and parts purchases for police Cadillace Gage V-150 armored cars.

Prosecutors did not recommend bail for Ong and the former police executives.

Several police officers in active service, non-uniformed police personnel and traders were also ordered arrested over the allegedly anomalous transactions, which total P385.48 million.

In a motion filed on November 19, Ong sought all-day hearings from December 2 to 5, 2013 to expedite the prosecution’s presentation of evidence.

“It is worth noting that the continued detention of all the accused in the instant case should be the primordial consideration in the bail hearings. Hence, it would be unfair and unjust to all of the accused who are under detention…if their respective Petitions for Bail would not be speedily resolved,” Ong’s lawyers said.

Fourth Division chairman Associate Justice Gregory Ong, no relation to the contractor, has already informed the defendants that the Sandiganbayan cannot allow more hearing dates.

He said the court has more than a hundred pending cases that require equal attention from the Sandiganbayan. — JDS, GMA News
