Muntinlupa City readies hero's welcome for Olympian Martinez

After competing in the Sochi Winter Olympics and finishing in 19th place, figure skater Michael Christian Martinez will be given a hero's welcome by his hometown of Muntinlupa City.

Muntinlupa City Mayor Jaime Fresnedi said the welcome will include a motorcade, the state-run Philippines News Agency reported.

"He is first and foremost a Muntinlupeño and our City is proud of him,” said  Fresnedi. “We are very privileged to have an Olympian in our midst, and young as he is, he is an inspiration to us all that indeed, dreams are still possible.”

The 17-year-old Martinez can also expect P100,000 from the city government, with the amount taken from the City Mayor's Special Activities Fund.

For its part, the city council passed a resolution recognizing the Muntinlupa School for Child Development (MSCD) where Martinez is studying.

The resolution commended the school for its role in shaping Martinez into a model Muntinlupa resident and Filipino. — DVM, GMA News
