Escolta building fire under control; P20-M structural damage estimated

A fire that razed a building along historic Escolta Street in Manila on Wednesday was placed under control after 9 a.m., but not after causing some P20 million in structural damage.

But investigators are still determining what caused the fire that used to house the City College of Manila and Philippine National Bank, radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported.

Firefighters managed to place the fire under control at about 9:19 a.m., the report said.

They expect the fire to be declared out as early as Wednesday afternoon or evening.

Earlier, Vice Mayor Isko Moreno ordered a safety assessment of the fire to see if there is a need to slightly alter Friday's Traslacion or procession for the Black Nazarene.
