Truck runs over cyclist on Marikina bike lane

A 31-year-old single mother was killed after a truck hit her while she was pushing her bike on a bike lane in Marikina City.

Victim Lorelie Cruz Melevo died on the spot after being run over by a truck driven by Jonathan Silverio along Mayor Gil Fernando Street around 8:10 a.m. on Tuesday.

A report by Oscar Oida on GMA News Tv's QRT said that according to the police, Melevo was on the bike lane when hit by the truck.

Silverio, who has been detained at the Marikina City Police Station, told police that he did not notice the cyclist.

Insp. Sanny Cortez, head of Marikina police's traffic division, said Silverio has been charged with a criminal complaint of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property.

The group “We Like Bike Lanes in RP Movement” said at total of 196 cyclists have been killed in Metro Manila roads in the past the past 10 years.

It said Marikina was among the top five areas in the metropolis with the highest fatalities despite having bike lanes.
